What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are molars, also called third molars, that are the last teeth to develop. Wisdom teeth often completely form during ages 17-19, and may erupt during the late teenage years or early 20s (if not extracted before this time). While some people can safely keep their wisdom teeth without side effects or complications, many have these third molars removed.

What should I expect during wisdom teeth extraction?

Before having your wisdom teeth taken out, follow your pre-procedure instructions. You might have to avoid foods and drinks before your scheduled treatment. Make arrangements for someone to be with you and drive you home after the procedure.

You might receive sedation to help you relax or general anesthesia, causing you to fall asleep. Dr. Parhizkar makes tiny incisions, gently removes the affected teeth, and closes incisions or places gauze in empty gaps left behind. 

It’s important to follow your instructions after wisdom teeth removal. Take any medications as directed, eat a soft food diet, and ice the affected area to minimize swelling and discomfort. Gargle with warm salt water if asked to, and avoid drinking through a straw until the treated area heals.
