What is bone grafting?

To supplement your weak, existing bone tissue in your jaw, bone grafting requires a simple surgical procedure.

When you need a dental implant, the structure of your jawbone has to be strong enough to anchor it. You might also need bone grafting if gum disease causes bone and tooth loss as well.

Grafting material can come from your body, another person’s body, an animal, or a synthetic material.

Dr. Parhizkar discusses your options before the procedure.

Why do I need bone grafting?

Your teeth have roots that stimulate your jaw’s bone growth and development. When you have a strong jawbone, you have stable support for your teeth.

However, if you lose a tooth or several teeth, your jawbone can atrophy due to its lack of stimulation, causing it to weaken and become damaged. Unfortunately, you can continue to lose teeth as your jawbone keeps deteriorating.

What can I expect during the bone grafting procedure?

To perform your bone graft, Dr. Parhizkar and his team use advanced technology, giving them impeccable precision.

During your procedure, you won’t feel anything due to sedation. Once you’re asleep, Dr. Parhizkar also gives you a local anesthetic to numb the area.

To begin the procedure, he makes an incision, separating the gum from the graft placement location. He then injects the grafting material into your jawbone and seals it with a collagen membrane.

Once your gum tissue gets stitched up, your recovery begins.

What is the recovery process for bone grafting?

After your procedure, you might experience some drowsiness for a few hours until your sedation medication wears off.

As your mouth begins to heal, side effects, such as slight discomfort and inflammation might occur. Your pain can be managed with over-the-counter pain medicine, or the team can give you a prescription if needed. Ice packs can also help reduce any swelling.

Depending on the complexity of your bone loss, you might be able to have your bone graft performed during the same visit as your dental implants. If not, it may take several months for your jawbone to fuse with the grafting material. Once that occurs, you’re ready for your implant.
